We currently have an opportunity available within our highly innovative Integrated Transport Systems (ITS) area of the business, which specialises in the use of smart technology and systems for traffic signalling, traffic monitoring and enforcement cameras, variable message signs, access control systems, street lighting and ancillary roadside equipment. Colas has invested in developing the next generation of traffic solutions with the amazing potential of our Wattway solar panel road surface already being recognised – delivering more efficient and safer journeys for road users.


About the Role

This is an exciting role to work as an ITS Engineer and you will be responsible for the installation, commissioning and maintenance for the ITS business for either Highways England or Local Authorities whilst providing our clients with the highest levels of quality and delivering projects within required timescales. You will:

  • Be responsible for gaining comprehensive knowledge of all equipment and systems within ITS whilst delivering all installation and commissioning activities to the required standards
  • Be required to travel extensively across the UK as contracts require your expertise including staying away from home during week days
  • Produce all associated test and handover documentation within the required timescales and standards
  • Audit your own work activities to ensure minimal errors and inaccuracies
  • Provide accurate daily reporting and operational progress within individual contracts and projects
  • Support the ITS Operations Managers and Contract Managers in their decision making by communicating all on-site considerations effectively and produce HEA/NHSS 8 Sector Scheme portfolio
  • Undertake risk assessments and method statement reviews for all work undertaken and identify areas of health and safety risk whilst conducting on-site works
  • Ensure all activities are undertaken with due regard for staff, own and visitors’ safety and with regard for the environment to prevent pollution, comply with legal and corporate requirements and minimise environmental impact

This role offers very competitive rates of pay, as our basic salary is very competitive and we offer 1.5 X earnings for overtime and night rates, which will account for c. 70% the role on a 40 hour contract with additional hours available. Colas also offer:

About you

We are looking for an experienced ITS Engineer or a knowledgeable individual with experience working in an equivalent role such a Highways Engineer, Electrical Engineer, Highways Electrician, Commissioning Engineer or Highways Technology Engineer. In addition to significant experience within the highways engineering industry and experience working on Local Authority or Highways England contracts you will:

  • Have experience working with IP and RS485 feed equipment
  • Be resilient and able to problem solve when under pressure in the field
  • Possess a deep customer centric delivery focus
  • Have proven experience of working within a telecoms fixed line engineering environment
  • Have proven experience of working with, and jointing/splicing copper and fibre cables
  • Hold an HNC in Telecommunications or professional electrical / electronic qualifications
  • Be willing to work predominantly outdoors in all weather conditions and often work at heights or in confined spaces as well as night work which accounts for the majority of work in the role
  • Hold a valid ES/CSCS card
  • Be G39 qualified
  • Hold a Site Supervisory Training Scheme certificate (desirable)
  • Be HEA/NHSS 8 authorised (desirable)
  • Be Fibre Optic qualified (desirable)
  • Hold an IPAF card
  • Be electrically qualified to;
  • BS 7671 wiring regulations (17th Edition)
  • City and Guilds 2330 or 2365 Level 3 or equivalent
  • City and Guilds 2391-52 Inspection and Testing (desirable)
