About the Role

Colas are recruiting for a Construction Manager to manage key client expectations and operational delivery, supporting contract commitments whilst ensuring the compliance with all Quality procedures and safe working practices.

Acting within financial authorities, in respect of contract revenue, expenditure and budgets in line with operational forecasts. Driving cost efficiency and promotion of self-delivery through promotion of the One Colas culture.


Principle Accountabilities:

  • Provide leadership, motivation and direction to the contract unit delivery team
  • Efficient management and utilisation of all business unit / company resource through programming, planning and effective dialogue with peers / clients
  • Liaison and Leadership of supply chain deliver and programming
  • Ensuring data provision to meet reporting requirements
  • Develop and update regular activity programmes for all contract responsibilities in accordance with client requirement
  • Maintain professional approach positively reflecting the image of the company
  • Ensure the safe and efficient running of all contracts to budget with full responsibility for the financial performance of contracts
  • Preparation and explanation of annual budget forecast in partnership with business accountant
  • Maintain / develop good relations with all key and potential clients incorporating regular meeting and site visits
  • Provide regular point of contact for all personnel
  • Be responsible for site safety by ensuring compliance to method statements and risk assessments using induction / toolbox talks / appropriate use of PPE. Ensuring constant compliance to all applicable CDM regulations
  • Responsible for the safety and welfare of all staff and operatives
  • Ensure all personnel comply with company procedures
  • Promote and enhance safety awareness in the business, encouraging a zero tolerance to unsafe acts and a zero target for LTIs
  • Undertake safety audits [12per annum] and toolbox talks [12per annum] as designated
  • Demonstrate and deploy strong contractual and commercial awareness
  • Hold a high level of experience in highway construction and maintenance
  • Interaction with subcontractors ensuring all appropriate information is made available, review and approval of accounts prior to release of payment
  • Arrange / convene pre-start, progress and review meetings ensuring discussion of variances, contractual arrangements and any required corrective actions
  • Support, encourage and develop all staff / operatives within your control identifying all appropriate training needs
  • To ensure that all operations carried out within your area of responsibility are undertaken with full regard for safety of visitors, other members of staff and yourself.
  • Ensure compliance with companies’ safety & quality procedures
  • Maintain compliance with agreed policy on procurement of goods and services
  • Control overtime payments as directed or in accordance with contract requirement
  • Attend all commercial and management meetings as directed
  • Assist Commercial estimating where required over the procurement of new works assisting with client development
  • Support Bid team when requested to actively support business growth
  • Undertake all other appropriate duties as assigned by your line manager


About you


The successful candidate will have a strong background in surfacing and civil engineering with extensive experience in Asphalt and Concrete Roads.


You will also have:


  • Appropriate ONC/HNC/HND qualification in Construction / Civil Engineering
  • Extensive experience in Highways England Frameworks
  • 5years in a similar discipline on fast track motorways and trunk roads
  • Proven track record of resource / personnel management
  • Working knowledge of health and safety legislation and requirements
  • Experience in overseeing Road marking application
  • Full clean driving licence
  • Hold a high level of experience in highway construction and maintenance
  • SMSTS / IOSH (Safety Related Qualification)
  • NRSWA Street works
