A-One, the joint venture company comprising Colas and Halcrow, have won an important IHT (Institution of Highways and Transport) award for innovation.
In a ceremony held on 19th June at the Royal Air Force Museum in London, A-One were presented with the “Ringway Award for Innovation” for their “Retriever Motorcycle Recovery Unit”.
This piece of equipment is a motorcycle with a fold-out trailer at the back which has the ability to tow broken down cars from a highway. The trailer, which can collapse to a width of 1.05m, less than the width of the handlebars, allows the Retriever to comfortably travel through standing traffic to the scene of an incident.
This means speedier recovery times, and because of this the Retriever is estimated to make an annual economic saving of £12m due to congestion times being cut.
The Ringway Award acknowledges progression in problem solving within the highways and transportation industry, and its purpose is to recognise and encourage imaginative thinking. In making their choice for the top spot, the judges were looking for criteria such as design strengths, benefit to the wider community, ingenuity and of course topical issues such as price and sustainability.
