Surfacing project begins on New Tyne Crossing

At the beginning of February 2010, Colas began work on a project to provide surfacing to the new Tyne Tunnel. The contract is part of the major construction scheme to build a second tunnel to carry vehicles under the River Tyne and to refurbish the existing tunnel which opened in 1967.

Worth £3 million the project will once again see Colas working for Bouygues - this time laying bituminous surfacing to the carriageway that will run through the tunnel. Once completed, the new carriageway will alleviate congestion as vehicles leave the city of Newcastle.

In addition to the above, Colas have also secured the construction of the north toll plaza (where vehicles will pay to enter the tunnel). This section of the contract alone has a value of £2.5 million. It will see Colas carry out 17,000 square metres of surfacing, including the installation of drainage and kerbing.

Through the duration of the project there will be various road closures, and Colas will also be providing temporary traffic management as part of their Bouygues contract.
