Repave surface course A6119 Blackburn
Having 35 years of proven historic performance and approved for use under clause 926 of the specification for Highway works, Repave was recently used by Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council as a sustainable solution to carry out essential maintenance works on the A6119.
The A6119 is a busy dual carriageway on the outskirts of Blackburn and joins the A677 at a traffic light controlled junction.
Blackburn with Darwen DC/Capita Symonds chose to use Colas’ unique hot in-situ recycling process to recycle the existing carriageway combined with an overlay of new material. The existing HRA surface course showed no foundation failure and was in good condition structurally but “worn out” as evidenced by joints ravelling, surface cracking, rutting and some chip loss was evident.
The solution was to use the Repave process and recycle 25mm of existing material and apply another 25mm of new 10mm Colrug HAPAS approved Thin Wearing Course. The works comprised recycling 16,000m2 of existing road surface which was in need of replacement together with an overlay of Colrug thin surface course.
Prior to the start of the surfacing the channels and tie-ins at each end were planed to allow the new surface to be re-laid to existing levels. The Repave process was used to recycle the existing carriageway to a depth of 25-30mm. On top of the hot recycled material 25mm of new Colrug thin surfacing material was applied. Compaction was completed by conventional means using a 12ton deadweight roller. Approx 2-300 tonnes of Colrug was laid.
Repave, enabled the quantity of new asphalt required for the scheme to be reduced by 38% and further reduced the number of lorry movements on the local road network, reducing impact on the local community and surrounding environment. The newly recycled road foundation can accept surfacing and traffic quickly which reduced the need for long term diversion schemes due to limited traffic congestion.
