Case Study - Southampton
Works for Southampton City Council
May 2006
Phase 1 - 1557m2 of Heritage Surfacing
The Bargate Development at Southampton involved the pedestrianisation of an existing section of road.
Southampton City Council, Colas Limited & Halcrow, working as the newly formed Southampton Highways Partnership, demonstrated the benefits of Early Contractor Involvement by fully consulting on the scheme to determine the best approach. Colas viewed the site and suggested a finish that would delineate the pedestrianised area and blend with the historic surroundings of this part of Southampton. The necessary repairs to the existing bituminous pavement were identified by Colas and carried out by the Southampton Direct Works Organisation.
Colas then laid Heritage surfacing using flexible, buff coloured, Spraygrip II binder and a 70% yellow gravel with 30% bauxite mix. This is the first time that this recently modified binder system has been used.
The works commenced on the 2nd May and phase 1 was completed by the 11th May.
As soon as works were finished the French market set up and opened, to the satisfaction of the Council and the many residents and visitors who enjoyed shopping in the new pedestrian area.
