Fibredec SC and SAMI
About Fibredec
Fibredec is a unique combination of bitumen emulsion, chopped glass fibres and aggregate. It is a patented and proprietary process applied only by Colas and fully trained licensees.
In a single operation, specialist machinery cuts and applies glass fibres between two layers of Fibredec binder to form a sandwich type matrix. The fibres can vary in length from 30mm to 90mm and rate of spread from 30g/sqm to 90g/sqm. The tensile strength of the glass fibres provides reinforcement. Selected aggregates are then added via a conventional or purpose built chipping spreader.
Applicator vehicles have been developed for large carriageways and for sites with restricted access such as footpaths, towpaths and cycleways. Awkward spaces can be treated by use of the special Fibredec hand lance.
Application is completed by rolling and sweeping, leaving a crack and fatigue resistant surfacing characterised by enhanced tensile strength.
Surface Course
Over blacktop or concrete, Fibredec will waterproof and bind cracked and crazed surfaces, restoring skid resistance and enhancing appearance. The quality and appearance of Fibredec has proved popular with Local Authorities for applications where a high standard of preparation and finish is particularly important. The system can be applied as a single coat, double coat or racked-in dressing. Substrates should be laid to the finished required levels. Fibredec has no regulating properties or ability to build up levels. giving finished thicknesses of between 5 and 15mm. The selection of binder, chippings and the length and rate of spread of the glass fibre depends on site conditions.
Stress Absorbing Membrane Interlayer (SAMI)
When applied prior to the addition of an asphalt overlay, Fibredec inhibits reflective cracking. At sub-grade or sub-base level, Fibredec can be used for oversite sealing and binding prior to the construction of subsequent layers. In use, Fibredec is superior to other treatments. Because it is sprayed in-situ there are no adhesion problems and the membrane cannot ruck or tear. Fibredec is also faster to apply than conventional SAMIs. It is able to withstand trafficking between laying and overlaying and the final wearing course need not be applied immediately. Fibredec SAMI is particularly effective when laid under microasphalts and thin surfacing where extensive preparatory works would otherwise be necessary. Colas Colrug and Ralumac 2000 are ideal partners to Fibredec SAMI in this application.
