Colrug thin surfacing

Colrug - BBA Certificate No. 03/H079
Colrug is a paver-laid, thin asphalt surfacing material for roads which are structurally sound but require a durable and economic treatment to restore surface texture and ride quality. Colrug provides a uniform, even-textured finish for all classes of road from trunk roads to country lanes. Combined with Repave in-situ road recycling, Colrug can be laid at most times of year.

Thin Overlays have come about as a result of the ongoing search for what could be termed the "ideal" road surface treatment: one that is durable, easy to apply and environmentally friendly. Widely accepted as a civil engineering solution to road maintenance problems, thin overlays generally combine a high performance, bituminous binder with selected aggregates. Although hot applied, their application is quicker and causes less disruption than more traditional treatments.

Colrug is laid to a nominal 20mm thickness, with some reprofiling ability up to 40mm. Typically it is 0/10mm gap graded, but 0/6mm and 0/14mm are also available. Colrug, the thin overlay offered by Colas, has the advantage to the resident and road user of generating less tyre noise than alternative processes and its open texture provides surface drainage in wet weather, reducing spray and dazzle. It has a high initial skid resistance - texture depth greater than 1.5mm - and, unlike conventional hot-rolled asphalt, Colrug application does not require a chipper with tractor feed - a potentially hazardous activity on a trafficked road. The fast application process enables the road to be quickly re-opened to traffic. Colrug is also available in red.
