Adding Social Value
Local authorities face a period of fiscal constraint, so we see our role as making a positive contribution towards enabling them to make important decisions around budgets.
This means services have to deliver maximum value money – show greater value for every pound spent. We have embraced the Social Value Act and the additional emphasis it has placed on delivering social benefits from local services. Colas has worked closely with communities, visiting community centers and local schools and inviting them to visit our sites.
As contractors, we are providing new jobs at all levels, taking on school leavers and the disadvantaged, building apprenticeship levels and skills in local communities.
All of our employees are encouraged to do their bit through our community involvement programme to volunteer in projects in their own localities.
Our community involvement sometimes takes the shape of joint venture work that brings together expertise in local road networks and operational and asset management forged in the cauldron of London, one of the World’s busiest cities. It can take the form of participation in umbrella organisations like Business in the Community where we partner with a local school to provide school-side training in areas like safer driving. Co-operation and sharing has also led to our own Traffic Management Academy that has received Lantra Award recognition and has become a resource for other companies and organisations to use.
