R4E
In recognition of Colas' performance in implementing excellence
and good practice, the company was awarded 5-Star Recognised for
Excellence (R4E) in October 2011.
R4E is a distinctive and prestigious accolade based on the EFQM
Excellence Model - the most widely used management framework in
Europe. The 5-Star award is testament to Colas' working methods and
the dedication of its employees to continuous improvement.
Health and Safety
Colas has won multiple awards and commendations for its health
and safety procedures; established over the years into a core
company value. Stringent safety management processes, operational
procedures, audit facilities, and an effective and efficient
business in full compliance with set performance standards and
BS18001 have cemented our awards success.
Safety has always been, and will always remain, a first priority
for our organisation and we are fully committed to continually
improving our safety systems to ensure that our business continues
to attract recognition and merit from health and safety awards
bodies. All of our safety procedures undergo constant reviews to
ensure that best practice is sustained at all times.
Partnership Working
By creating and sustaining mutually beneficial partnerships with
local councils and through joint ventures, Colas have received a
number of awards. Driven by our presence in Portsmouth through the
PFI, we engaged with local communities through various CSR projects
and this has added real value to our organisation.
In recognition of our efforts we were awarded the South East
England Engineering Excellence Awards 'Community Projects' prize.
We also won the 'Highway Contract Partnership' prize at the
Highways Magazine Excellence Awards for our partnership with
Portsmouth City Council in the successful delivery of the PFI
scheme.
Recent Awards
ICE South East England Engineering Excellence Awards Community Projects
We won the ICE South East England Engineering Excellence Awards'
'Community Projects' prize for our work in engaging with local
communities through a series of projects and activities. This
award was driven by our presence in the area and current Portsmouth
PFI.
Presented annually, the awards recognise projects which have
demonstrated engineering excellence or made a real difference to
the environment or community; and they are the highest honour for
civil engineering in the area.
Colas' contract partners for the submission of the award were:
Pell Frischmann (civil and structural engineering designers),
Ensign Highways (SPV) and Portsmouth City Council (Colas' PFI
client).
Highways Magazine Excellence Awards - Highway Contractor Partnership
Colas won the award for 'Highway Contractor Partnership' at the
Highways Magazine Excellence Awards for creating and sustaining
mutually beneficial partnerships with Portsmouth City Council; the
local community and businesses; suppliers and third parties; to
successfully deliver the Portsmouth PFI programme.
This award was presented to us in recognition of our superb
demonstration of a pioneering and collaborative partnership with
Portsmouth CC and Ensign (through the PFI).
Colas were judged on how the company had raised standards for
the benefit of all stakeholders and it was noted that we had
achieved this by reviewing our performance outcomes.
Comments received from the judges stated that: "The early
example of partnering through the PFI has, 5 years on, clearly
brought tangible benefits to the city. Colas have demonstrated
considerable commitment to the people of Portsmouth".
RSTA Health and Safety Awards - Mobileye
Colas were runners-up in the RSTA Health and Safety Awards for
innovation for the installation of Mobileye collision avoidance
technology in our distribution fleet at Warrington. The collision
avoidance device was utilised by us for the purpose of aiding the
implementation of a 'driver fatigue' risk management system into
our business and to ensure the safety of our employees on long
journeys.
Mobileye provides both visual and audible alerts should a driver
deviate from a lane or become too close to the vehicle in front,
thus reducing the possibility of an incident occurrence.
