CIHT Awards: Employer Award for Excellence in Skills and Development

In the 2012 CIHT Awards Colas were Highly Commended in the Employer Award for Excellence in Skills Development.

The submission was based on the company's Graduate Training Scheme but also included its ability to nurture talent across all employee groups - in particular its operatives, who are often working remotely, removed from the office environment, and therefore without computer access.

The judges said: "This skills development scheme has clear commitment from senior management, providing a good range of support for employees at different levels within the organisation. The programme looks to not only develop staff but also expand the range of skills available within the company. The judges were pleased to see clear progression routes for individuals and the value of the scheme to staff, the company and wider industry is evident."

CIHT Awards: A-one+ win four awards

A-one+ (a Colas, Costain, Halcrow joint venture) received four accolades at the 2012 CIHT Awards in the Sustainability, Innovation, and Health and Safety categories.

The innovative 'Intellicone' won the Health and Safety category and was Commended in the innovation category. Researched and developed together with Highway Resource Solutions, the cone has been tried and tested on live traffic management sites and addresses the danger to the work force of errant vehicles. The cones activate an alarm and give workers an instant warning if the cones have been breached on site, so that they can take the necessary action to ensure their personal safety.

Another submission was for the development of the new technology which allows for the restoration and re-use of damaged vehicle restraint systems (barriers) on the highway network. In the Innovation category this was Highly Commended and in the Sustainability category it was Commended for its driver efficiency and reduction on environmental impact.

The benefits are impressive and through utilising this new technology A-one+ were able to make a CO2 saving of 727,375kg per year, as well as achieving savings through reduced vehicle movements, fuel, materials and cost.

Colas is committed to investing in innovative engineering solutions and these awards demonstrate the success of some of the solutions that have been implemented.

RoSPA Awards: RoSPA Gold for Occupational Safety

Colas' Health and Safety team was presented with a RoSPA Gold achievement award for Occupational Safety in May 2012. This accolade is another addition to a long line of RoSPA awards won by Colas over the last few years and is testament to the hard work and dedication of the team.

Colas was complimented by RoSPA Awards Manager, David Rawlins, who said: "The RoSPA awards programme provides well-deserved recognition for the winners and spurs on other organisations to raise their standards of accident and ill health prevention. We congratulate Colas on its success and encourage it, and all our other winners, to remain committed to safety and health, an approach that is well recognised to be good for workers and the bottom line."

RoSPA Gold award winners must all achieve a very high level of performance and demonstrate well developed occupational health and safety management systems and culture as well as outstanding control of risk and very low levels of error, harm and loss.

RoSPA Awards: Highly Commended for MORR

In May 2012 Colas won a major award at the RoSPA MORR Awards, being judged Highly Commended for Managing Occupational Road Risk.

This is the second year in a row (and indeed the third time in four years) that the company's approach to road risk has been recognised by this prestigious level of award.

Colas CEO, Lee Rushbrooke, said: "We should all be extremely proud of this award, and it is fitting recognition of the continued success of our SAID campaign and the dedication and hard work of our SAID team."

Investors In People Awards: Silver Award for Continuous Improvement

Following a review by an external assessor in early 2012, Colas was successful in achieving a silver award from Investors in People.

The assessor commented that there was very clear evidence of continuous improvement since Colas' last review in 2009.

The Investors in People standard provides a national framework for improving business performance and competitiveness through a planned approach to setting and communicating business objectives and developing people to meet these objectives.

This award is an endorsement of how Colas applies its company values: Responsible, Talented, Innovative, Visionary and Passionate.
